Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock’s roofing line breaks into three series that matter for parts matching: the Classic series (discontinued 2014, but still common on Escondido homes built during the 2005-2010 boom), the Pro series (2015-present, identifiable by the gray adhesive strip and “Pro” stamped on the nail flange), and the commercial-grade Spec line (found on several mixed-use developments near Westfield North County). The Classic series used a 1.5-inch exposure with a proprietary fastener spacing; Pro moved to 1.75 inches and standardized the pattern. This matters because a Pro-series ridge cap will overhang a Classic field shingle by roughly a quarter inch, which looks minor until you’re staring at a wavy ridge line from the driveway.

We verify fit three ways: the stamp on the nail flange (faded but usually legible on the north-facing slope), the exposure measurement from butt edge to butt edge, and the underlayment type, since Spec line requires a heavier synthetic underlayment that changes the effective shingle height. OEM Unilock parts are getting harder to source for Classic series; we use Atlas or CertainTeed equivalents with matching ASTM D3462 specs and document the substitution on the written quote. Signs Your Unilock Roofing Is Failing

• Granule loss concentrated in valleys or along the rake edge. Unilock’s granule adhesion is generally solid, but Escondido’s combination of UV exposure and occasional Santa Ana-driven sand abrasion beats up the leading edges first. Once the asphalt substrate is exposed, the shingle absorbs heat instead of reflecting it, and thermal cycling accelerates the crack pattern.
• Lifted or curled tab corners, especially on south and west faces. This is usually adhesive strip failure, not shingle failure. The factory-applied sealant degrades faster in the inland heat; the shingle itself may have years left, but the wind uplift rating is gone once the tab breaks free.
• Dark streaking that doesn’t match the original color profile. Algae-resistant granules wash off unevenly in Escondido’s hard water runoff. The streaking is cosmetic, but the pattern tells us where the granule layer is thin enough that UV penetration has started oxidizing the asphalt mat.
• Nail pops visible as raised dimples or rust streaks. Unilock specified ring-shank nails in the Classic series, but some Escondido installers substituted smooth shank to save time. Smooth nails back out with thermal expansion; ring-shank grips the OSB or plywood better, but when they pop, they tear the shingle around the fastener head.
• Daylight visible from the attic at ridge or eave joints. This is the one that moves the call to urgent. It means the ridge vent, starter strip, or ice-and-water shield has separated from the field. In Escondido’s occasional hard rain events, water enters at the gap and runs horizontally along the deck before it finds a penetration point to drip.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can walk the perimeter with binoculars, note the location of lifted tabs or missing shingles, and check the attic for daylight or water stains. That documentation helps us quote accurately and shows up on the photo record we build before the crew arrives.

What we don’t recommend: climbing a 6/12 or steeper pitch, prying up sealed shingles to check nail placement, or attempting to heat-weld membrane in a valley. Unilock’s adhesive strips reseal with hand pressure and solar warmth, but once broken, they don’t reseal reliably without replacement. The fall risk on a typical Escondido two-story with a walkout basement is real, and the cost of a single ER visit dwarfs the repair quote.
