PGT Driveway & Pavers: The Escondido Owner’s Guide

PGT driveway and paver systems in Escondido typically run $7,000-$18,000 for paver installation and $5,000-$14,000 for full driveway replacement, with most failing edge restraints, settling base panels, or cracked interlocking units showing up within 8-12 years in our clay-heavy soil. We stock PGT-compatible edge restraints, base stabilization grids, and paver replacement units on our Escondido trucks, and we install with a written price before any work starts. Most owners notice the problem first as a wobbly paver line along the garage apron or a drainage trough forming where the base has washed out under winter rains.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT’s driveway and paver line spans three distinct series: the residential PGT Permeable line (2012-2019), the PGT Pro-Lock commercial-grade interlock system (2016-present), and the PGT Enviro-Grid permeable paver with integrated base panel (2019-present). The Permeable series used a 60mm thickness with a proprietary lug-and-groove edge; Pro-Lock moved to 80mm with a beveled interlock and a different edge-restraint clip spacing at 24 inches on center. The Enviro-Grid is the easiest to identify: each unit has a molded-in base grid that eliminates the separate Class II base layer, and the part number is stamped on the underside grid cell.

To order the correct replacement, we need the series, the color code (PGT used regional color batches, so “Desert Tan” from 2015 is a different dye lot than 2022), and whether your installation used sand-set or mortar-set bedding. We source OEM PGT units when the color match matters, and we use Belgard or Techo-Bloc equivalents when the structural spec is the priority and the original dye lot is discontinued. The Haven Standard requires we document which route we took and why, in writing, before we pull a paver.

Signs Your PGT Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your PGT Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Pavers rocking underfoot along the garage or walkway edge. The PVC edge restraint has either cracked from UV exposure or pulled its spikes from the concrete haunch. In Escondido’s inland heat, we’ve seen edge restraints go brittle in seven years where coastal installs last fifteen.
  • Low spot collecting water after rain, especially near the street or downspout outlet. The aggregate base has settled or washed out through a joint. Our clay soils in the Kit Carson Park area expand and contract seasonally, and a base that was compacted to 95% Proctor density can drop to 85% within five years if the bedding sand migrates.
  • White efflorescence blooming across paver faces, then pitting or spalling follows. Moisture is wicking up through the bedding layer and carrying salts. This is common where PGT’s earlier permeable systems were installed without a geotextile separation layer between native soil and aggregate base.
  • Joint sand completely gone, weeds established, pavers shifting independently. The polymeric sand has degraded or was never installed. On sloped driveways in Escondido’s hillside neighborhoods, we’ve traced this to irrigation runoff carrying sand downhill joint by joint.
  • Cracked paver units in a straight line or circular pattern. This indicates a point load or base void beneath, not random failure. A cracked paver sitting on full base is rare; the crack is telling you where to dig.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Escondido Price Range What’s Included
Paver driveway installation (new) $7,000 - $18,000 Excavation, Class II base, bedding sand, pavers, edge restraint, joint sand, compaction
Concrete driveway installation (new) $4,500 - $12,000 Removal, forms, rebar or fiber mesh, pour, finish, control joints
Driveway replacement (remove and reinstall) $5,000 - $14,000 Full removal, base reconditioning or replacement, new surface
Sectional paver repair (up to 100 sq ft) $800 - $2,500 Lift, rebase, replace failed units, recompact, resand joints
Edge restraint replacement only $400 - $1,200 Remove failed restraint, re-secure haunch, replace spikes/clips, backfill
Driveway sealing $250 - $700 Clean, repair minor joints, apply breathable sealer

The wide range on paver installation reflects three variables: access for excavation equipment (steep Escondido hillsides add labor), whether we hit expansive clay requiring deeper base replacement, and paver unit selection. PGT’s Pro-Lock 80mm runs higher per square foot than standard 60mm residential units, but the base prep is the bigger swing in the quote. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, we put the full scope and price in writing before we touch a paver. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation; material defects carry the manufacturer’s warranty, which we document in your file.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check three things: whether the paver is loose (lift it and photograph the base condition), whether the edge restraint is cracked (visible without tools), and whether joint sand is present (probe with a screwdriver). What you find tells us whether you’re looking at a $400 edge fix or a $5,000 base rebuild.

Where DIY goes wrong is in the compaction and grading. Hand-tamping replacement base material leaves voids that telegraph through in one season. Regrading without checking the original slope toward drainage can redirect water toward your foundation. And matching PGT’s dye lot by eye, in Escondido afternoon sun, is a recipe for a checkerboard driveway. We carry a moisture meter and a nuclear density gauge on the truck for a reason.
