Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling produces several paver and hardscape lines, and the part you need depends on the series stamped into the edge of the paver itself. Look for “Sterling” followed by a three-digit code on the chamfered edge of any original paver. The 400-series permeable pavers, common in Escondido installations from 2015-2020, use a proprietary 60mm thickness and a narrow joint profile that standard bedding sand will not fill correctly. The 600-series architectural pavers run 80mm thick and require a different edge restraint clip.

We source OEM Sterling components where the joint geometry matters, and use quality aftermarket equivalents for edge restraints and bedding layers where the spec is standard. The aftermarket polymeric sand we carry meets ICPI standards and performs identically to Sterling-branded product at roughly 60% of the material cost. One compatibility gotcha: the 400-series permeable pavers require ASTM C1319 No. 8 stone in the bedding layer, not the No. 57 that works for standard interlocking pavers. Signs Your Sterling Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Pavers rocking underfoot or tire. This usually means the bedding layer has eroded or compacted unevenly, often from water migrating through failed joint sand. In Escondido, our intermittent heavy rains followed by dry spells accelerate this washout faster than coastal climates.
• Visible joint gaps widening beyond 1/4 inch. Polymeric sand degrades from UV exposure and vehicle fluids; once the binder breaks down, the joint loses interlock and the pavers drift. Sterling’s lighter-colored sands show this discoloration earliest.
• Edge restraints pulling away from the perimeter. Plastic or aluminum edge restraints fail when spike anchors corrode in our alkaline Escondido soils or when the restraint was installed without adequate staking depth. The whole field starts to fan out.
• Low spots collecting water 48 hours after rain. This indicates either base settlement or, with Sterling permeable pavers, a clogged bedding layer. The No. 8 stone we mentioned earlier traps sediment over time, especially near oak trees.
• Chipped or spalled paver surfaces. Sterling’s 400-series uses a softer aggregate blend than the 600-series; de-icing salts or pressure washing closer than 12 inches will fracture the face. We see this most on north-facing driveways in Escondido’s Hidden Meadows area where moisture lingers.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely inspect joint condition, measure gaps, and photograph the paver stamp code for us. What goes wrong with DIY paver repair is almost always base preparation: without compacting the bedding layer in 3/4-inch lifts with a plate compactor, the repair sinks within a season. Polymeric sand also requires precise activation, watering to the exact depth the manufacturer specifies; too little and it does not set, too much and it washes out the binder.

We do not recommend DIY on any driveway bearing vehicle loads. The base depth for residential vehicle traffic is 6-8 inches of compacted aggregate, and getting that specification wrong means tearing it out again.
